Bringing music from Britain’s remotest village to Radio 2

Mark Radcliffe’s Radio 2 Folk Show rounded off 2023 with special live music recorded in the UK’s most remote mainland community.

Inverie, on the Knoydart Peninsula beside Loch Nevis, can only be reached by ferry or a 17-mile hike over rugged terrain.

World-class folk artists Karine Polwart and Julie Fowlis travelled there with musical friends Iain Macfarlane and Ingrid Henderson, composing music on the way. Karine took the ferry; Julie made the hike.

Once in Inverie, the musicians performed in The Old Forge - probably the remotest pub in mainland Britain.

Live music and conversation was recorded on location for a special edition of The Folk Show - available here, soon.

This project was produced in collaboration with Soundscape Productions and Lewis Harrower, who created a complete story of the adventure for BBC Radio 4, called Pilgrimage for a Pint, also available soon.

7digital have produced the Radio 2 Folk Show since 1998, alongside its many sister projects including 21st Century Folk. Radio 2 is the UK’s most popular radio network and our other strands for the station include Pick Of The Pops, Sounds Of The 60s and Tony Blackburn’s Golden Hour.
